CHIARA SAMATANGA

Cellist

Chiara Samatanga was born into a family of musicians in Zürich, Switzerland and studied with Thomas Grossenbacher, Jens Peter Maintz and Steven Isserlis. She is is the 1st prize winner of both the International Lutoslawski Cello Competition (Warsaw) and the Pierre Fournier Award (London) and appears regularly as a soloist with orchestras such as the Tonhalle Orchestra Zürich, Beethoven-Orchester Bonn, Philharmonia Orchestra (London), Kammerphilharmonie Potsdam, and Frankfurter Opern- und Museumsorchester. Chiara’s first CD as a soloist with the Münchner Kammerorchester was released by Sony in 2016 and her second CD with solo works by Ernest Bloch appeared in 2017. Since 2018, she has also been pursuing an active concert career as a member of the internationally acclaimed Carmina Quartet, which released its latest CD recording in 2024.

Chiara leads a cello class at the Bern University of the Arts, where she also teaches chamber music. In addition to her musical activities, Chiara holds a Master’s degree in psychology and pursues research in the field of musicians’ health.
